ICARE4Justice
Led by Drs. Frank Tuitt and Saran Stewart from the University of Connecticut (UConn), the purpose of The Intersectional and Comparative Advancement of Racial Equity for Social Justice (ICARE4Justice) series of Global Summer Summits is to bring together a group of transnational critical scholar-practitioners to analyze, assess and design important considerations for establishing a global strategy and framework for advancing equity for racially and ethnically minoritized communities in education research, praxis and policy. Participants in the multi-year summits will have the opportunity to share best practices with each other as they present their diversity and inclusion research related to the promotion of access and equity for racially and ethnically minoritized communities in higher education. Participants will also have the opportunity to cultivate global frameworks centered on racial equity. The overall plan is for this summit to result in several conference deliverables to disseminate the global framework cultivated including a podcast series, a white paper outlining the framework, a transnational grant, symposia panels, and a special research journal issue. The Intersectional and Comparative Advancement of Racial Equity for Social Justice is a program designed to advance graduate students, faculty, policy makers and community organizers interested in global issues related to racial equity, intersectionality, social justice, decoloniality and anti-colonialism. The podcast is supported by the Office for Diversity and Inclusion at UConn and The Hague University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.

The ICARE4Justice Summit provided global scholars and practitioners with frameworks to develop anti-racist policy endeavors specific to their focal areas. Yet, in the midst of engaging in academic work and activism it is important to not forget about our well being. That said, this episode focuses on a lively panel discussion held on the fourth day of the summit titled, Self-Care as Resistance: Counternarratives on Navigating Racism, anti-Blackness, and Coloniality in Higher Education. Led by Dr. Diandra Prescod from the University of Connecticut, you will hear from panelists who are at various stages of their careers and also offer unique perspectives based on their country’s context. Join us to hear more about how they each approach self-care and what we can do on an individual level to better practice community care.
If you would like to learn more about self-care practices and resources, feel free to access this link that includes a community toolkit with readings, podcasts, videos, and poems shared by our panelists.

We are joined by educators and administrators from higher education institutions on a global scale to hear about why they believe it is important to engage in diversity, equity, and inclusion work. They cover concepts focused on inclusive growth, indigenous philosophies, and cultural humility, among others. Our speakers also engage in the question of what is needed to give up to fully engage in this work to decolonize the mind in an effort to reimagine a more equitable and inclusive global society. Our speakers end by extending advice to audience members who wish to engage in this work through acts of reverse-mentoring, practicing active listening, and implementing racial healing circles at our respective institutions.
